๐Ÿ“– What is Division?

Division is a way to split things into equal groups or to share things fairly.
When we divide, we're asking "How many groups can we make?" or "How many in each group?"

The division symbol (รท) means "divided by". When we see 12 รท 3, we read it as
"twelve divided by three". The answer is called the quotient.

Think of division like this: If you have 12 cookies and want to share them equally
among 3 friends, how many cookies does each friend get? 12 รท 3 = 4 cookies each!

Division is the opposite of multiplication. If 3 ร— 4 = 12, then 12 รท 3 = 4 and 12 รท 4 = 3.

๐Ÿ’ก Worked Examples

Study these examples carefully before starting the practice questions.

Example 1

Problem: 15 รท 3 = ?

โ—โ—โ—โ—โ— | โ—โ—โ—โ—โ— | โ—โ—โ—โ—โ—

This means: divide 15 into 3 equal groups

  1. We have 15 items total
  2. We want to make 3 equal groups
  3. We can think: 3 ร— ? = 15
  4. We know 3 ร— 5 = 15
  5. So 15 รท 3 = 5

Answer: 5

Example 2

Problem: You have 20 candies to share equally among 4 friends. How many candies does each friend get?

20 candies โ†’ 4 friends โ†’ ? candies each

This is a division word problem

  1. Total candies: 20
  2. Number of friends: 4
  3. We need to find: 20 รท 4
  4. Think: 4 ร— ? = 20
  5. 4 ร— 5 = 20
  6. So 20 รท 4 = 5

Answer: 5 candies each

Example 3

Problem: 24 รท 6 = ?

โ—โ—โ—โ— | โ—โ—โ—โ— | โ—โ—โ—โ— | โ—โ—โ—โ— | โ—โ—โ—โ— | โ—โ—โ—โ—

Divide 24 into 6 equal groups

  1. We can use repeated subtraction
  2. 24 - 6 = 18 (1st group)
  3. 18 - 6 = 12 (2nd group)
  4. 12 - 6 = 6 (3rd group)
  5. 6 - 6 = 0 (4th group)
  6. We made 4 groups of 6
  7. So 24 รท 6 = 4

Answer: 4
